Derick Melander
Derick Melander was born in Saratoga Springs, NY. He graduated from Elizabeth Seton College (now Iona University) with an A.O.S. in Communication Arts and from the School of Visual Arts with a B.F.A.
His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Vogue, GQ, and on NPR. In the U.S., he has received commissions from the City of San Francisco, the City of New York, the Chapman Perelman Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Eileen Fisher, Authentic Brands Group, TOMS, and Levi Strauss & Co. Internationally, he has had solo exhibitions with Swire in Hong Kong, the YIA Art Fair in Paris, de Warande in Turnhout, Belgium, and Museum Rijswijk in The Hague.
Recently, Derick was a visiting artist at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design. He has received four consecutive NYFA/New Works grants to create site-specific work in the public realm of Queens. In May 2025, he had a two-person exhibition with Kelly Reemtsen with Galleri Oxholm in Copenhagen. In September 2026, he has a solo show with Hall Space in Eldred, NY.

20 Empty Tree Beds - 24 Participating Artists
Ridgewood's sidewalks contain more than 800 empty street tree beds, roughly one for every 90 residents. For one weekend, twenty of these overlooked spaces will be transformed into temporary, site-specific artworks by 23 participating artists.
Visitors are invited to explore the neighborhood on foot, discovering how contemporary art can temporarily transform familiar streets while reflecting on public space, urban ecology, and the hidden potential of the city's overlooked landscape.
